How can I better discipline my child as a single parent?

It can be tough for many Florida parents to effectively discipline their children. This is especially true after divorce, when existing behavioral issues may be complicated by the effects of the separation. There are steps you can take to prevent discipline issues from occurring, as explained by VeryWellFamily.com.

Don’t put your child in the middle

Communication is key to any parenting relationship, whether separated or intact. That’s why it’s important for you to communicate issues about child-rearing to your ex directly instead of having your child disseminate messages. This puts your child in the middle, which can result in an unbelievable amount of pressure on kids. Adults must remain in charge of disciplinary tactics for them to remain the most effective.

Don’t give up on discipline altogether

If your ex takes a different view of discipline, it might make you feel as though your efforts are all in vain. That’s no reason to forgo the rules altogether, as this will have a detrimental impact on your children. Create rules and consequences within your home and be sure you stick to them no matter what. If you feel as though your ex’s tactics are severely lacking, be sure to sit down with them to create a solution to any oversights.

Don’t be too strict

In the same token, don’t make your rules too strict to overcompensate for a lack of rules at the other home. This will only serve to confuse your child and may even lead to more acting out. Rules should be created to build character and instill in your kid the importance of being responsible. Accordingly, your former spouse’s parenting style shouldn’t necessarily impact your own.
