Frequently asked questions about adoption

If you’re considering adopting a child in Florida, it’s natural that you’ll have many questions. Bringing a new child into your home is an extensive process to ensure that both you and the child are happy with the arrangement. The following are a few frequently asked questions about adoption, which will give you a good idea of what to expect.

How long does adoption take?

According to Parents, the timeline typically depends on the situation. In some cases, the process can take as little as six months, while other families are made to wait to two to five years for the adoption to be finalized. If you plan on adopting internationally, you should expect a wait of about a year.

Can a single person adopt a child?

While the number of single people filing for adoption has been growing over the years, most agencies prefer that couples adopt. The idea is that a child has a better chance at a healthy development with two parents in the household. If you’re single and hoping to adopt, it’s important to establish that you have a strong social network surrounding you.

Are there different types of adoptions?

The National Adoption Center lists a few different types of adoptions you can apply for. Children whose parents can no longer care for them are sometimes placed in temporary homes, from which they can be adopted. You can also take in a foster child with plans to adopt at a later date. Infant adoption is another option, although this usually takes much longer to finalize. There are also closed vs. open adoptions. A closed adoption is when the birth family provides no identifying information to the adoptive family, while an open adoption allows the birth parents and adoptive parents to connect.
